Aquatic Physical Therapy

Who doesn’t like an occasional dip in the swimming pool?

It’s relaxing, refreshing, and fun. But did you know that it can also help those dealing with chronic pain, serious injury, or disability?

If you’re looking for a way to increase mobility, accelerate healing time, or decrease pain and swelling, Cawley Physical Therapy & Rehabilitation can help. We’re proud to offer aquatic physical therapy in NEPA at our multiple locations in Pittston, Kingston, Scranton, Nanticoke, Carbondale, Wilkes-Barre, and Trucksville.

From providing effective neck and back therapy to improving balance and coordination issues, aquatic therapy has a wide variety of benefits. Our fully equipped and highly experienced Doctors of Physical Therapy provide patients with individualized care plans tailor-made to help them reach their goals and improve their quality of life.

What is Aquatic Therapy?

Aquatic therapy is the use of water and specifically designed activity by qualified personnel to aid in the restoration, extension, maintenance, and quality of function for a person with acute, transient, or chronic disabilities, syndromes, or diseases.

While aquatic therapy does occur in a special swimming pool, that doesn’t mean the focus of every patient’s workout is on swimming. In reality, swimming is just one of many potential exercises used in aquatic therapy, with others including underwater jogging, balancing on one leg, using a kickboard, and more.

Benefits of Aquatic Therapy

Many of the reasons for aquatic therapy’s effectiveness are due to the qualities of water itself.

For patients with joint pain or weight issues, the buoyancy that comes from being submerged up to the chest or even just to the waist makes it easier to perform physical exercises without putting as much stress on their back, hips, knees, and ankles. Simultaneously, because water has greater physical resistance than air, every individual movement burns calories and strengthens muscles.

Benefits of aquatic therapy for recovery include the following:

  • Low Impact
  • Resistance
  • Heat – All pools at Cawley Physical Therapy are kept at 93 degrees!
  • Buoyancy
  • Strength
  • Mobility
  • Stability
Common Conditions Treated by Aquatic Therapy

When ancient Greeks used hot springs to improve circulation to today when water-based exercises regularly help stroke patients relearn important physical activities, aquatic therapy has a long and rich history of success.

That history is backed up by decades of research proving aquatic therapy’s usefulness in treating many different debilitating conditions. Safe, effective, and even relaxing, aquatic therapy can help relieve pain, increase flexibility, recover balance, strengthen muscles, reduce inflammation, and improve cardiovascular health, among other things.

Common conditions treatable with aquatic therapy include the following:

  • Arthritis
  • Herniated/Bulging Disc
  • Spinal Stenosis
  • Post-Surgery Rehab
  • Injuries, Sprains, or Strains
  • Lower Back Pain
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Chronic Pain Conditions
  • Stroke
  • Head Injury
  • Pediatrics
