How to Prepare for Your First Physical Therapy Appointment

Are you new to physical therapy? If you’ve never seen a physical therapist before, you might be wondering how to get ready for your first appointment and what type of care you’ll receive. There are many treatments a physical therapist might provide depending on the cause of your pain, like aquatic physical therapy or soft tissue mobilization. Physical therapy patients receive treatment plans just for them, so you won’t know what yours will entail until you go. However, there are a few ways to get yourself ready for physical therapy that can help you.

Here are some tips on how to prepare for your first physical therapy appointment.

Bring a List of Symptoms

Even if you’ve been experiencing pain for a while, you might not be able to accurately describe it when someone asks. To help make it easier for yourself and your physical therapy team, bring a list of your symptoms with you. This should include the type of pain you experience, where the pain is, what makes it better or worse, and what you think the cause could have been. The more detail you can provide regarding your pain, the better your team can help you.

Wear the Right Clothes

When you get to your appointment, you want to be ready so that you don’t waste any time with your physical therapy team. This means wearing the right clothes when you get there. Normally, what you would wear to a doctor’s appointment wouldn’t matter too much. However, exercise and stretches are a huge part of physical therapy, so you need clothes that allow some movement.

Know That You Might Have Exercises for Home

Physical therapy can be extremely effective, but it does require some hard work. Some who go to physical therapy will have to continue their treatment when they get home, such as doing exercises recommended by their physical therapy. You have to put in the work to make physical therapy effective, but it will be worth it when you start getting relief from pain, stronger muscles, and improved mobility, function, and balance.
